Google Apps
I took the plunge and sold my soul to the Google devil. I moved my domain, email, everything to Google Apps. The process was painless (I think), and they make it very easy to enable things - pretty slick. I did it basically for the geeky factor only, I am too much of the "Manager" at work now, I need to get my hands dirty (and yes I know this is hardly difficult or too technical).

Now all I need is a tool to sync my Apple address book with the Google contacts, something coming soon from a couple of vendors from what I can see (Spanning Sync for one).

The only problem I faced with this was my old DNS/domain hosting company didn't allow for the creation of CNAME records. So in the end I had to move my DNS to DNSExit.com, who offer free DNS hosting and allow just about any record type - nice :) It was very annoying to find a lot of US companies don't understand there are TLD's other than .com! Yes, I use a .co.uk domain, deal with it :P GoDaddy (my current web host) can't handle DNS for .co.uk domains :( So now I have three 4 companies managing things for me, easily.co.uk is my registrar, DNSExit is my DNS host, Godaddy is my web host and Goggle does everything else.

If you're interested, DNSExit also offer Dynamic DNS, that could be a fun thing to play with - have my Mac at home host some stuff...

Geeking over with for now.

Google Apps is amazing. I have Google Apps for my URL, www.sactownmedia.com. My other url, RadioMatthew.com, accepts mail through my Sactown Media Google Apps - I just have my email address "matthew(at)radiomatthew.com" forward to "matthew-at-sactownmedia.com", then through the magic of Google, I verify that I'm the owner of the first e-mail address so I can compose messages as that address.

Google = <3

Let's hope they stay nice, if they start charging for things we'll all be in for a shock :)

Don't kid yourself—Google has built an advertising empire. Everywhere you turn, there's Google ads. There's advertising (though very minimal) in their e-mail (both Gmail and Google Apps). There's Google ads on blogs (it's on my blog). Their AdSense program pays out pretty well, and the companies that go through Google pay the search engine well. Speaking of which, there's ads all over that. You can even pay Google to advertise your site (ever wonder what those "free" Google Ad credits are hosting companies offer to lure you into purchasing their services?).

Google is a multi-million dollar company because they've creatively exploited advertisement. They slip it in where we least notice it, and if we really stopped to take a look, we'd notice it's EVERYWHERE. With that said, they're not going to charge for much anytime soon.

I moved my domain to Google Apps a couple of months ago. It pretty straight forward to do. I was using gmail before and hated having all my outgoing mail marked as "sent on behalf of" :-(

Did you find a way to have your old gmail account merge with your google apps account? I have been too lazy to do any real research on this :P

You can't. You can, however, have your Gmail forward all its mail to Google Apps, then have Gmail archive the messages. Probably a smart thing to do—if you ever cancel your domain, your Google Apps will be rendered useless, but you'll still have a copy of your emails on your Gmail account forever.

I actually POP the messages, since Google allows for auto tagging when you do that. This way I can tell when they're messages from my other account (which I use to sign up for online accounts - so get more junk).

Works for me.

I feel a little left behind, looks like many of my friends have already done this... See what age is doing to me :)

I'm sure if you had to pay for it you would have done it ages ago? ;o)

As for merging my old account with the new one ... I couldn't find a way of doing it ... this will sound ridiculous but I just forwarded all my mail to my new account and had to reapply all the tags :-( Actually, it wasn't too bad, as I created all the filters that I had in my old account and most of my email got tagged automatically, but still, you're too lazy for that :o)

I just feel wary of anything Google at this point. Didn't they help the government put a search engine or what not for the CIA's database et al?

I'm just wondering if having all your information at one location is a safe thing. What if it's compromised? Maybe I'm being too paranoid about it, but I can't see this as a good thing IMO.

I hope you realise the CIA has those "search engines" in a whole lot more places than Google...

When it comes to security, I look at my data and realise if the CIA wants to read the flirty emails, junk and the occasional software product key, the can be my guest :) Don't know what you store in your email :P
